Reunited And It Feels So Good

Look at the position of the felt pad in relation to the feed dogs! eek!

Yesterday I was reunited with my old Brother sewing machine after over three years! I’d lent it to my school’s art department when my sewing mojo departed.  As you can see, it was in a filthy dusty filthy rusty filthy state - even the bobbin case was in the wrong position, wedged.  #HoHum

This was after 1 hr of cleaning, at this point I had to get the WD40 out!

It took about three hours to get him back to good order (pretty near total dismantle job). When I finally got to the point where I could thread the needle and do some practice stitching, features I’d forgotten were so useful started to reveal themselves - the working needle threader, the bobbin action, the needle up/down doopher and, most excitingly the ability to go commando and not use the foot pedal, just push a button and vroom vroom.

I don’t know why I like this feature so much but I do and I am delighted to have it back in my life.

Considering this is a pretty low-end machine I’m impressed by the welly under the bonnet in comparison to the cheap Aldi machine I inevitably ended up buying to use in the interim! (I only really bought it to embroider rude words on napkins, which was totally worth it, but seriously, sewing over a dark side seam was like attempting the ascent of K2.)

Brother purrs much more, feels reliable, sews like butter and his stitches are straight!  #Woohoo

They’ve never met before

He’s now all shiny on a shelf waiting for action.  Not long baby, not long ...

One more sleep - packed and ready to go ...

Oh yes ... I can hardly contain myself I'm so excited ... Bletchley Park here I come ...

In case you've been snoozing under a rock for the last few months of my blogging life, there's a fantastic Quilt Exhibition at Bletchley Park this weekend ...

I've got a quilt there  ....

How are you baby? Are you dwarfed by brilliance?
Have you made friends? Are the big quilts playing nice?

Apart from two categories from the Quilt Guild on display there are also Canadian Red Cross Quilts, specials from the Holocaust Collection, talks, workshops and general nerdy heaven ....

Look at this wonderfully geeky quilt from the people who work at GCHQ ....

I'm all packed and ready to go ...

... a bit of English Paper Piecing for the journey ... Squares and HSTs for a baby Swoon Block ...

all zipped up in my wonderful pouch from Nikki @ Sewquine ...

I'll be taking a ton of photos ... and will report back after the weekend ...

Hope your weekends are as inspiring as I know mine will be ...

I'd make the Sorbetto top from Collete patterns:

”I'd make an eating out kit: a little pouch to hold a knife, fork, spoon, and a pair of chopsticks. Lately I've been feeling guilty about using plastic utensils when I go to restaurants that put your food in takeaway containers even though you'll be eating there. I felt bad that those plastic forks and things only get used for about ten minutes and then thrown away... they barely had a chance to live! :D”

Much as I want to jump up and down and ramble on about how brilliant each one is, I want to maintain impartiality - it’s important that the winner is really down to you guys voting later this week … and I think these entries just speak for themselves!

Come back tomorrow for the final three: Bianca G, Emily L & FlyingBlindOnARocketCycle

lipsmackinfussycuttingseampressingthreadmatchingbuttonstitchinggrometpoppingpleatmakingdiamondcuttingmuffwarming Japanese Scrap Bag Challenge! Part I of III

Greetings Blogfans (I’m channelling Roland Rat?? sheesh)

I’m back in the blogosphere a bit … phew … long story and bit too much to recount here, but here I am anyway!

Now, let’s get down to business ….

My lovely Eternal Maker Japanese Scrap Bag Challengees have really really pulled it out the bag!  I am so impressed, so delighted and so proud to present the fruits of their labours …

Back in the summer the original challenge was to use a Japanese scrap bag from the Eternal Maker, with very little else added,  to create something fabtastic ... and boy oh boy have I got some lovely stuff to show you ...

I’m going to split this post into three parts, showcasing 3 entries per day and then voting will start on Wednesday … So be sure and pop by for the rest of the loveliness … I'm not commenting on anything, to maintain impartiality!  This will be down to your votes, not mine!

So, today we’re looking at Ali @ Very Berry Handmade , Eilidh, and Sarah@NarcolepticInACupboard.

Clicking the images will take you to them looking lovely and shiny and big on flickr!

“If I had some gorgeous Japanese fabrics, I would want to do something really special with them... My friend is having a baby later on this year, and I think I would like to make some cute little patchwork baby booties... I can see them now - they would be so fab!”

”I would make a stocking for my wee 1 year old friend Joseph. He'll be spending Christmas in Japan this year (and maybe next) as his mum moved out there with him in March. We all really miss them and this would be a lovely way to show that I'm thinking of them and hopefully he'll use it once he's back in Scotland for a long long time and then the fabric will remind him of Japan!”

“If I won the scrap bag I'd like to make a little fabric game I've been thinking about ...”

Blog of The Month? Moi? Bwahaha!

In other, non cat- or sky-related news I just got picked as blog of the month by the sewing directory!

How cool is that??!!

ahem ... shame I haven't posted or sewn much in 2 weeks LOL!

I'm sorely tempted to do another Blogtoberfest ... I did it last year and it was fab ...

I'm just really aware that in my real world I really don't have the time ... harrumph .. I can make time, right?

Are you finding that you're spreading your time thinly at the mo?
